Welcome and Introduction: 1:00pm – 1:05pm
Hunter Acconcio: New Growth Recovery 1:05pm – 1:20pm
New Growth Recovery—we’re right by City Hall in downtown Springfield. As you can see here, we’re what you would refer to as a PHP, which really just stands for Partial Hospitalization Program. Think of it like your 6-hours-a-day, 5-days-a-week program. We also have something called IOP, which is an Intensive Outpatient Program.
We have a day option for that. It’s a shorter time than the PHP. That would look like you’re coming in for treatment into our program. Usually, it’s Monday to Friday from 9:00 AM to 12:30 PM, but again, that one we kind of have liberty to flex depending on, you know, if the patient was formally in PHP.
What we really like to do clinically is have someone come in—you know, they’re coming right into PHP—Monday to Friday, 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM, and then we’re able to softly step down after about that 4–6 week period that they’re in PHP. They would step down into IOP. Again, it can look like 3 hours a day, 5 days a week. Sometimes it’s less than that, sometimes it’s more.
Now, we also have an evening IOP, which is Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 4:30 PM to 8:00 PM. As you can see on the right, we do provide transportation. For MassHealth, we’re going to be doing PT-1. We help with the process of PT-1, getting set up with the account, and really just making sure that our clients are getting to their rides. That’s kind of more their responsibility, but sometimes, for whatever reason, the driver will not show up and pick the individual up. In that case, we’ll help out—we’ll send additional transportation, whatever’s needed to really just get someone in our space.
We accept the whole gamut in terms of insurance. We really have found it extremely important, serving our community, to understand that insurance is notoriously a barrier for treatment, and we’re not going to allow that to be the case here with us. Evidently, we accept a wide variety of commercial insurances—out-of-network and in-network. We’re also in-network with TRICARE, which is very, very huge. We’re able to help our active duty and our veterans. We’ve been doing a lot of work with some of the local Air Force bases, for example, and really just trying to make sure that we’re offering services to our first responders.
Our clinicians are going to be engaging in training that’s going to specialize them to specifically understand a lot of those experiences that first responders, correctional officers, veterans, and active duty military members may be experiencing.
Then again, for MassHealth, we take a wide variety of MassHealth plans. It does say there “coming soon,” the WellSense and then the Blue Cross Blue Shield. I can tell you right now, as of today, we are in-network with Blue Cross Blue Shield.
So, if anyone does want to get in touch with us, these are the main methods of contact, but just to make it easier, you can reach out to me personally. My email is hunter@newgrowthrecovery.com
and my cell phone number is in the chat.
In terms of treatments that we offer, we’re doing a lot of psychoeducational groups. We’re doing a lot of DBT and a lot of CBT. There’s a combination of group therapy and individual therapy. We typically have about 20 to 25 clients in the daytime PHP and IOP programs, and about 10 to 15 in the evening IOP program. Again, it’s an average—it depends on the time period.
For folks in PHP, they’re doing individual therapy sessions weekly. Folks in IOP, again, we aim to have them do individual sessions weekly. If there’s an opening, we will do that, but at least every other week. Folks in IOP receive individual sessions with a master’s-level clinician.
Most often, mental health and substance use disorders go hand in hand, and those individual sessions are a good time to unpack what may not come out during group therapy.
We also offer a wide variety of holistic modalities. We have a yogi who comes in every Friday. She is a trauma-informed specialist certified in addiction and recovery. We open the whole office space, and she gives clients an opportunity to engage in yoga. I was hesitant at first, but if you’re willing to give it a try, it can provide a lot of zen, and we’ve found that to be true.
In addition to yoga, we offer sound therapy and access to a gym. We’re located in the MassLive Building, also known as One Financial Plaza. We’re on the 15th floor, and on the 9th floor there’s a CrossFit-style gym called Build-Em-Up Fitness.
Every Wednesday, patients and staff participate in a group lift led by a CrossFit coach. Fitness is not for everyone, but for many of us in recovery, it has been very impactful. We promote healthy minds, healthy bodies, and healthy spirits.
If someone finds fitness meaningful to their recovery, we can coordinate a discounted gym membership—sometimes up to a year—even after graduation. We want to help cultivate long-term recovery supports.
Recovery looks different for everyone—12-step programs, AA, NA, Dharma, SMART Recovery, knitting groups, or even 3D printing. Our case management team helps identify interests, strengths, and hobbies and connects people to the community.
Upon completion of treatment, we ensure every participant has two of the following: a PCP and a long-term therapist. We help connect clients to providers who accept their insurance, including in-person therapists throughout Western Mass.
Our program is about 2–3 months on average. We also have an alumni program that is being developed, including weekly meetings and community engagement opportunities. Building a strong recovery community is important to us here at New Growth Recovery.
